National Energy Corporation

NEC Corporate Profile National Energy Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago Limited (NEC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of The National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago Limited (NGC). The forerunner to the National Energy Corporation was a Co-ordinating Task Force set up in 1976. Incorporated in 1979 to continue the work of the Co-ordinating Task Force in developing the country’s natural gas-based projects and industrial infrastructure, NEC was involved in the construction and operation of the early petrochemical plants and the adjoining port and marine infrastructure at the Point Lisas Industrial Estate. Today, NEC is a fully operational entity within the NGC Group with responsibility for development and management of industrial estates, port and marine facilities for the gas-based energy sector. NEC’s assets presently include:

  • The Point Lisas Channel
  • Turning Basins
  • Marine Vessels [9-Tugs, 2-Workboats and 1-launch]
  • Four Multi-User Piers at Point Lisas

It is planned that all the new industrial estates and ports currently under development will be vested in NEC.

BACKGROUND:

CORE BUSINESS

  • To develop and promote the orderly management and utilization of hydrocarbon resources.
  • Own and operate marine and other infrastructure to facilitate the import and export requirements of Petrochemical and metal plants.
  • Development and Management of Marine Assets at Point Lisas and the La Brea Industrial Estate.

In February 2004 Government expanded NEC’s mandate to include:

  • The promotion of new energy based industries and the provision of infrastructure to support these developments

Petrotrin

BACKGROUND:

Petrotrin is the only fully integrated oil company in Trinidad and Tobago involved in exploration and production on-shore and off-shore, refining, marketing and storage.

PERFORMANCE:

  • Recurrent expenditure is increasing due to increase in wages owing to a large workforce. Materials and contract costs are increasing due to inflation.
  • Contribution to Government revenue is proportional to the Company’s net income and averages approximately 60% for the period 2002 – 2006.
  • The value of assets are also increasing due to improvement in working capital and sound debt management.
  • Oil and gas production profile increased between 2002 – 2006. Overall, land and Galeota production declined but Joint Venture production increased.

BACKGROUND:

Established in 1972 when service stations were required from BP, ESSO, SHELL and TEXACO. The Trinidad & Tobago National Petroleum Marketing Company Limited is the most diversified petroleum marketing company in the English-speaking Caribbean.

Lake Asphalt of Trinidad and Tobago (1978) Limited

BACKGROUND

Lake Asphalt is engaged in the mining, processing and marketing of Trinidad Lake Asphalt or Dried Asphalt which is extracted from the Pitch Lake in La Brea, Trinidad.

CORE BUSINESS

Mining, processing and distribution of asphalt and asphalt products in the local, regional and international markets. In addition, the company manufactures and markets Cationic Bitumen Emulsions and a range of industrial coatings and paints marketed under the Brand name – LASCO

T&T.E.C. is the sole electric utility in the twin island Republic and is responsible for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the country’s electrical transmission and distribution network.
